What I help with

You don't need to be in crisis to reach out

Most of the men I work with aren't falling apart — they're stretched thin, running on empty, or just tired of going through the motions. That's enough of a reason to talk.

Work stress & burnout

Constant pressure, long hours, feeling like you can't switch off — or like the job isn't worth what it's costing you.

Relationships & communication

Friction at home, pulling away from people you care about, or struggling to say what you actually mean.

Fatherhood

Trying to show up as a dad while carrying everything else. The pressure to get it right and the fear of getting it wrong.

Feeling stuck or lost

Going through the motions. Not depressed exactly, but not okay either. Like something is off but you can't name it.

Anxiety & low mood

Persistent worry, irritability, not sleeping, withdrawing — or feeling like you should be fine, but you're not.

Life transitions

New job, divorce, loss, becoming a dad, turning 40. Big changes that knock you sideways even when you expected them.

About JJ

Direct. Collaborative.
No therapy clichés.

A lot of men come to me after years of telling themselves they should just figure it out. I get it — that's what most of us were taught. But there's a point where carrying it alone stops working.

I'm Jacob (JJ) Emanuel, a Registered Psychotherapist based in Thornhill, Ontario. I work exclusively with men — not because it's a niche, but because I've seen how differently men experience the things that are weighing them down, and how differently they need to be heard.

My approach is direct and collaborative. We're not going to talk in circles. We'll dig into what's actually going on and figure out how to move forward.

FAQs

Questions men usually have

If you're on the fence, these might help.

That's most of the men I work with. We start where you are. There's no expectation that you'll know what to say or how to do this — figuring that out together is part of the process. The first session is just a conversation.
I don't offer direct billing to insurance companies. However, after each session you'll receive a detailed receipt by email — including my name, CRPO licence number (#10110), designation as Registered Psychotherapist, and address — which you can submit directly to your provider for reimbursement. Many extended health benefit plans in Canada cover Registered Psychotherapists (look for "RP" coverage on your plan). I recommend checking with your provider before we start.
Yes. What happens in our sessions stays between us. There are narrow legal exceptions — imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or child protection concerns — and I'll explain all of this clearly before we begin. In practice, confidentiality is the foundation of the work.
Sessions happen on a secure, PHIPA-compliant video platform. You don't need to download anything — just a private space and a decent internet connection. Most men find virtual sessions just as effective as in-person, with the added convenience of doing it from home or your car.
Individual sessions are $225. Sliding scale is considered on a case-by-case basis — reach out and we can talk about it. The initial 20-minute consultation is free, no commitment required.
Not at all. Most of the men I work with aren't falling apart — they're tired of just getting through the day, or they want to understand themselves better before things get harder. You don't have to hit a wall before you're allowed to ask for support.
